A word from our President

President's Letter July 2011

We just finished up with the conference; those who attended had a great time. Those who missed sure missed a lot. Brain Brazeal worked way after hours, often not quitting until dark. Many members were asked what they thought of the demonstration, some of the comments were:

"Learned enough in the first half hour to make it worth the price of admission."

"Learned a lot that I had never heard before."

"Lots of different techniques that I had never seen before, but they made a lot of sense."

I felt guilty that Brain was working long after his scheduled end time, but he seemed to love passing on information, and didn't mind at all.

Our thanks go out to Roy Troutman and Bruce Woodward who helped spread the word and recruit help. No one seems to step up on there own, but when asked to help they do so
immediately. Thanks to all who helped make this a success. We had one group that was on their way to Touchstone, but as Brain kept on demonstrating they waited and waited and didn't leave until dark. I know I learned a lot, Roy was the one who suggested Brain and he made a great choice.

We made about $700 on the conference, but this wouldn't have been the case if the auction was not the success it was. The auction brought in over $900. We try to keep the entrance fee reasonable and just cover expenses, I know a few thought it was way too much, but good demonstrators cost a lot. Brain didn't get rich on this demonstration he was paid $1200 and consumed 5 days. Must be about $5 per hour. Well let us know if you want to continue with quality demonstrators or not. The conferences are a lot of work. The sad part is that more of our members don't participate, and we get few from other areas. Give it your support or let us know that you don't want them at all.

Remember that our Hammer-Ins are held the second Saturday of the month at Burton's
Century Village. These are hands on events so bring your hammer. We are doing hinges at the July event, Nail headers and punches were done at the past ones. Come on out. It's hot but fun was had by all, bring the dish to pass and iron in the hat item. We are also having our annual event at Ky Green's place on route 60 south of Vermillion. This is a joint meeting with the NOB group. This was started by Bill Hahn and a lot of fun. Ky has kept it going. Bring a dish to pass and item for iron in the hat. The date is July 16th. See you there.

Happy Hammering, Ralph
